North Woods Summer Morning: Slow Down and Just Be
There’s something special about summer mornings in the North Woods of Minnesota.
The light fog drapes itself across the low spots, outlining the hills and valleys in soft, gentle layers. With each sunrise, the topography comes alive. The forest, the meadows, the winding streams — all bathed in early morning light.
On this particular morning, it was just me and my drone — the DJI Mavic 3 Classic. No agenda. No client shoot. No plan. Just observing the quiet beauty that often goes unnoticed.
As I launched the drone, the familiar hum of the props blended into the sounds of nature: birds waking up, water trickling slowly through the landscape, and the distant rustling of leaves. The scent of dew-covered grass hung in the cool morning air. The sun slowly climbed, casting golden light across the fields and trees — the kind of light that feels sacred.
After a few peaceful minutes capturing aerial footage, I brought the Mavic 3 back to the ground. But I didn’t pack up right away. I stood there, breathing in the crisp air, feeling the damp earth under my boots, listening to the stillness.
It’s easy to miss moments like this.
Life moves fast. We live in a world full of distractions — notifications, deadlines, endless to-do lists. We tell ourselves we’ll slow down when we “have time,” but nature doesn’t operate on our schedule. It’s always here, quietly inviting us to pay attention.
The truth is, experiencing nature requires intention. You don’t stumble into moments of stillness. You have to seek them out. And when you do, you realize that while nature doesn’t need us, we desperately need it.
This wasn’t about content creation. It wasn’t about the drone footage. It wasn’t even about getting the perfect shot. It was a simple reminder:
Find time to just be.
Whether you’re a drone pilot, a photographer, an outdoor enthusiast, or just someone trying to unplug for a while — the North Woods have a way of grounding you. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.
